Chapter 1.1

Chapter 1. Toko is a gourmet

“Gallico’s story has a scent of winter. Like the freshly dropped and accumulated new snow, softly melting on the tongue, sacredly cleaning the heart with that piece of cool and fragile, that kind of beauty and sadness together exist.”

While turning the page of Paul Gallico’s short essay collection, Toko gives out a sweet sigh.

On the west corner of the third floor of this four-floor school building, there is the literature club of Seijo School which I belong to.

It is already the twilight and the sun in the west is going to set. Inside of the room, it is colored into a brilliant gold as honey floods in.

Against a segment of the well, the ball boxes are stacked highly, which seems originally to be used for some storage purpose. Among the boxes, there is an old oak-wood table. Nearby there are two steel book shelf and one locker. Those places are also completely full filled with unorganized piles of old book here and there which look so heavy. If earthquake happened, maybe those piles of book would drop down, bury and suffocate me under them.

In this small room filling with the old books’ smell and dust, Toko is sitting in a pipe chair, with knees slightly folding in front of chest.

Although the inside of the uniform’s pleated skirt can be seen barely, still I can notice that the feet might move little bit. Do not look, it is not a good behavior.

The whit cheek hides behind the bare kneecaps, and arms holds both knees. The thin fingers are flipping the book page with care and love.

Black front hair drops on the pure white forehead. A long three strand braid hangs from shoulder to the waist. Against the white skin, the blackness of hair, eyelash and pupils is eye-catching.

If staying silently, Toko looks in a great elegant shape, just like a doll.

But…

Slowly tearing the pages with white finger, Toko opens her mouth widely, starts to munch the page as a goat.

(Oh, she is eating… really eating. No matter how many times I see it, it is always so surrealistic.)

(Rustle, rip, tear…)

(Chew, swallow)

With a cute sound from the slim throat, the page is swallowed in. Tearing and eating the page, the cool face turns to a smile in a moment with the eye corners lowering as if it is immensely happy.

“Just as I expect, Gallico is delicious…! You know, Gallico is a New York writer. Although the movie Poseidon Adventure and the series of children’s literature Mrs Harris are also famous, my personal most favorite one must be Snow Goose. The painter Rhayader who lives alone in a lighthouse near a marsh, and the young girl Fritha appearing with a wounded snow goose in her arms, smoothly generate the connection between souls which cannot be cut off! They hold deep and gentle memory to each other, but never speak out with words… Oh! What a kind of pure love!”

“Emm…? Konoha, want me to stop flooding monologue? The important idea should never be held into the grave. If just shut up and bear, those sadness and beauty would rot. No matter how many times I read the last scene again and again, I cried out. Gallico’s story tastes like the best sorbet, which cools down and heals a burned heart. When it slides in through the throat, I cannot hold myself with that mouth feeling. Jennie and Snowflake are also great, please read! Definitely, I recommend Sumiko Yagawa’s translation.”

With fifty-page pile of writing paper on a shaky table and a HB pencil on my hand, I am writing a paragraph with three topics. Today’s topics are “first love”, “strawberry rice cake” and “capitol building”, anyway, something weird.

While lowing my eyes and filling the paper with words continuously, I find a break calmly.

“The taste of sorbet… Since Toko is really a monster, except literature, other food tastes like nothing, right? There is nothing can compare, is not it?”

Then, Toko puffs out her cheek in a moment.

“Alright. Let me finish it with the imagination, like ‘Oh, I wonder whether the sorbet tastes like this’. In addition, monster is a name with discrimination. I am just a poor high school student who deeply and strongly love to eat all kinds of stories and literature in this world. I am just a literature girl.”

“I believe that a normal high school girl would never suddenly tear off the page from a book and eat it. At least in my sixteen years life, I have never seen and never heard such kind of strange high school girl except Toko.”

Toko puffs out her cheek higher and shouts,

“E-nou-gh! Calling a girl as something strange that is e-nou-gh! My heat gets hurt. Mr. Konoha, you always make a gentle face which looks like you would even name your rose with Nacy or Betty at home and cultivate them carefully, but not delicate enough to a senior student.”

“Not delicate enough, which side?”

Although Toko makes out an unhappy-like sound as if saying “what you are talking about”, she finishes her mood, quickly jumps down from the chair. With the eyes look spoiled, she move her body towards here.

“Alright. Since my mind is as broad as the Andromeda nebula, I would tolerate the occasional offences from an impertinent junior. Moreover, is the ‘snack’ done?

It is really an easy-understood person. The voice sounds so cheerful. Just like the purr from a cat’s throat.

As a third year student and the president of this literature club, Toko is a story-eating monster.

Instead of drinking water and eating bread, she enjoys eating pages from books or the papers with writing as they really taste great.

Chapter 0

Literature Girl, and the Death-Desired Clown

By Mizuki Nomura

I was living a shameful life.

It is just like the only black sheep lonelily born in a group of white.

Without being able to enjoy the same thing, mourn the same thing, or taste the same food as my friends, I can understand little on those feelings which they can feel together naturally, such as love, gentleness or yearning. As this miserable black sheep, the only thing I can do is coloring my black fur with white, and pretending as one of them.

Through this way, I keep a mask on my face, continuing the absurd play, even until today.

Prolog. A memo as the self-introduction. Origin: the genius girl writer.

I was living a shameful life.

Emm, who said it? A star? An athlete? Or an arrested statesman since corruption?

Well, who cares.

Just becoming a high school sophomore, “my life” probably sounds too bluffing. But as 14 years old, what I experienced was astonishing indeed. Like being shacked upside down in a giant wave, just in one year I got a feeling as my life was terminated once already.

Because in that year, I became a mysterious genius girl writer, and caught attention from the whole Japan.

Everything started from the third year’s spring in the middle school.

At the age 14, close to 15, I have a group of friends, I have the girl I like, I live a happy life through the way as any normal middle school student. Then, just because I submitted my first fiction since I was born to a literature journal’s fresh-writer contest on a spur of the moment, I got the honor of the youngest winner in the history.

Since the fiction was written as a girl’s first-person view, and also I used a girl-like penname “Inoue Miu”, media advertised this award such like: “The youngest record on the history! The winner is a middle school junior girl!”, or “Realistic style and fresh sensibility wins referees’ highest applauses!”

Oh hell, what a shame.

“Since girl would be accepted better, let us sell this fiction as a work of a mysterious anonymous pretty-girl writer like this!” The editor tried hard to negotiate.

(It is already anonymous, why would people know the writer is a pretty-girl?!)

When I was still not able to accept it completely, the awarded fiction was published, and became the best sale. Just during the test marketing, the sale passed million. Following the adaption into movie, TV drama and also comic, it became a social phenomenon.

I got shocked.

My family also got lost.

“Err, about my old brother?... Just a normal mild boy. Anyway, so what? Well, the royalty is X hundreds million yen! Man, that is 20 times of father’s annual incoming!”

All those annoying things were coming out.

If took a subway, the hanging advertisements on which my book’s name was hugely printed filled the sight of eyes. If stepped into a bookstore, my books with fancy paper tape were stacked as a solid fort in front of the cash register.

“Miu should just be a middle school student. What kind of child is she? Maybe a cute girl.”

“I heard that she is a missy with noble qualities. But the real identity is not clear.”

“She must be taken cared by servant since a baby, never hold anything heavier than a pen.”

“Yep. Indeed with this feeling of ‘literature girl’, it cannot be wrong that she is a neat and lovely girl. Oh, Miu is so cute. Be my bride!”

With these words coming into my ears, it was too shameful and stressful to take a breath.

Sorry, please forgive me. That fiction is nothing good but just a whim. With this scribble on the notebook written in the class, I mistakenly received award, I apologize, really. What so called fresh sensitivity sounds foolish. It is just the boring word which a sucking child spoke to himself. It is all of the referees’ intentional joke. “Letting a 14 years girl win a literature award surprisingly seems so interesting!” “This would be a hot topics, even might excite the field of publishing!” “Also, the books are sold well so the publisher would be happy!” I just figured out those intentions. The god made a joke on me. Sorry for my lack of genius, please let me go, please.

Wishing to return to normal life, I kept low key at all kinds of situations in Japan. Oppositely, it got worse. Since the pressure caused hyperpnoea, I fell down in the school and was sent to hospital. “I could not write fiction anymore!” I cried poorly and tearfully, rejected to go to school, and made my father mother and younger sister worrying.

It was a shameful and embarrassed year, really.

Since then, the mysterious anonymous pretty-girl writer, Inoue Miu, disappeared with leaving that only one book. I normally took the entrance exam, normally passed, and became a high school student. There, I started to know the real “literature girl”, Amano Toko.

Why I started to write again?

Because in that day, under the shining pure-white Magnolia tree, I met Toko there.

Reflection & Review 4

Well, finally...

Goal.

To be able to understand spoken Japanese with normal speed and medium length.
Still, seems the causal speech, based on the performance in dict-conversation, my performance is not very good. More practice is necessary.

To be able to speak Japanese with correct pronunciation and pitch in medium speed and medium length. Put more attention on accuracy.
In this semester I tried a PE with a fast speaking material. With the help from sensei, I can go one more sentence every week. But I do feel that I learned a lot, no matter vocabulary or prosody. Still, problems on double-consonant and long-vowel exist, and somehow become more obvious during fast speaking.

To be able to communicate with people with daily-life topics under daily-life environment.
Currently it's in a little bit strange state: try to use more causal speech in daily communication, but the polite speech become worse meanwhile causal speech was not improved too much yet. Frequently mixed both in speaking.

To be able to understand written Japanese in long length. To be able to write medium length passage in Japanese.
With more expression we learned, writing become more painful once I tried to use what I learned.

Activity.

Review vocabulary every day.
Recently it's bad... didn't keep reviewing...

Shadow the material on SE twice a week.
Almost.

Read extra reading material everyday (another textbook, news in Japanese, lyrics, etc.).
Shameful...
